Rollins, Howard, Utley rank among Phils' all-time greats

Lancaster Online By ED GRUVER

From Wade Boggs and Cal Ripken Jr. to Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds, reliever Arthur Rhodes has faced his fair share of superstars.

It’s all part of being a 16-year veteran of The Show, of making 630 career appearances and logging 1,034 innings at the big league level.

So it can be said with some certainty that when it comes to assessing this generation of stars, in particular the Phillies’ Big Three of Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, Rhodes speaks from experience.

“They’re good hitters and you have to deal with them,” the Marlins’ southpaw said prior to fanning the only two batters he faced en route to earning a hold in Tuesday night’s 8-2 Florida win…

Utley enjoys All-Star Game spectacle

The parade up Sixth Avenue. The YouTube moment. The Home Run Derby. The 40 dozen autographs.

Chase Utley’s third trip to the All-Star Game didn’t end in victory last night, but he certainly left with some interesting parting gifts.

The much-hyped Yankee Stadium All-Star Game ended the way so many others have in recent years, with an American League win in a famous AL ballpark.

The AL pulled out a 4-3 victory in the bottom of the 15th and once again will enjoy home-field advantage in the World Series.

That might come back to bite Utley in October.

If he and the Phillies are lucky.

Utley left Yankee Stadium with a satchel full of memories. He set up a run with a sixth-inning single as the…

Chase hits 5 homers, enjoys the show

Chase’s knack for hitting line drives did him in on Monday night, as he didn’t hit enough home runs to make it out of the first round. Chase did put one into the upper deck and another off the facade of the second deck in right field of Yankee Stadium, but it his first round total of five home runs was not enough to carry him into the second round. Chase hit a number of hard line drives that landed just short of the fence in right field.

Phils bullpen catcher Mick Billmeyer was Chase’s pitcher.

“I think Mick did a great job of throwing BP,” Utley said. “I didn’t get goose-egged, which was nice. But…

Underdog Utley goes for Derby crown

If there’s one player who won’t be fazed by the Yankee Stadium aura or the hype surrounding the State Farm Home Run Derby, it’s Chase Utley.

Mark No. 26 in your program — Utley’s steely determination and ability to focus make him one of baseball’s premier talents. He’s also unconcerned to hear his name not listed as one of the favorites.

That distinction goes to Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton, whose batting-practice moon shots have already gained legendary status around the game. Utley hits line drives in batting practice and during games, line drives that sometimes land beyond the fence.

Some Phillies who witnessed Hamilton’s batting practice a few weeks ago reluctantly agreed. But …

“Don’t count out our guy, though,” Pat Burrell said.

Once…
